Located one kilometer off the powdery white sands of Nilaveli Beach near Trincomalee, Pigeon Island National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s two designated marine national parks. Named after the endemic rock pigeons that nest on its rocky pinnacles, the reserve protects some of the best surviving live coral reefs in the Indian Ocean.

For snorkelers and scuba divers, Pigeon Island offers an extraordinary underwater safari where encounters with wild sharks and sea turtles are virtually guaranteed in shallow, crystal-clear water.

1. Swimming with Blacktip Reef Sharks

The star attraction of Pigeon Island is its resident population of juvenile and adult Blacktip Reef Sharks (Carcharhinus melanopterus):

  • They patrol the shallow coral flats in water just 1 to 2 meters deep.
  • These graceful, black-finned predators are naturally docile and pose zero danger to snorkelers.
  • Floating quietly on the surface while three or four 1.5-meter reef sharks glide gracefully past you over table corals is an exhilarating thrill.

2. Vibrant Marine Biodiversity

Beyond the sharks, the shallow reef gardens are teeming with life:

  • Marine Turtles: Gentle Green and Hawksbill turtles grazing calmly on sea grasses and sponges.
  • Over 300 Reef Fish Species: Clouds of bright blue damselfish, clownfish darting inside sea anemones, giant trevally, butterflyfish, and spotted moray eels peeking from coral crevices.
  • Coral Formations: Expansive colonies of living Acropora branching corals, brain corals, and cabbage corals.

3. Practical Tips for Snorkelers

  • Best Season: May to September offers calm, flat seas with crystal visibility reaching up to 20 meters.
  • Boat Logistics: Fibreglass speedboats depart directly from Nilaveli Beach, taking just 15 minutes to reach the island.
  • Reef Conservation Rules: Never stand on, kick, or touch the living corals. Wear reef-safe biodegradable sunscreen to prevent bleaching.
“You don't need to be an expert swimmer or a certified scuba diver to enjoy Pigeon Island. Even children wearing simple life jackets and snorkel masks can float easily over the shallow reefs and see sharks and turtles right beneath them.”
