Spanning a lush jungle gorge between Ella and Demodara railway stations, the Nine Arch Bridge (locally known as Ahas Namaye Palama or "The Bridge in the Sky") has become one of the most celebrated photography icons in South Asia.

Constructed in 1921 during the height of the British colonial era, the bridge is an extraordinary feat of civil engineering: measuring 91 meters in length and rising 24 meters above the valley floor, it was built entirely of stone blocks, hand-fired bricks, and cement—without a single scrap of structural steel.

1. The Engineering Story of P.K. Appuhami

When World War I broke out, the steel rebar consigned from Britain for the railway viaduct was reallocated by the British government for Allied war efforts in Europe.

Faced with an abandoned project, a brilliant local Sinhalese master builder named P.K. Appuhami, working alongside British railway engineers, proved that the curved bridge could be safely erected using hand-hewn granite blocks and brick masonry. When the British railway inspectors hesitated to open the bridge, Appuhami famously offered to lie beneath the central arch while the first heavy steam locomotive drove across. The bridge stood firm—and remains in daily active service over a century later.

2. Best Train Timings for Photography

Watching a blue or red train thunder across the stone arches while white smoke curls against the tea hills is the ultimate photo opportunity.

Approximate daily train crossing times at the Nine Arch Bridge (verify morning schedules with your driver):

  • Morning: ~9:20 AM – 9:45 AM (Usually the most reliable morning crossing)
  • Midday: ~11:45 AM – 12:15 PM
  • Afternoon: ~3:20 PM – 3:45 PM
  • Late Afternoon: ~5:20 PM – 5:45 PM (Golden-hour lighting)

3. How to Reach the Bridge: Trails vs. Tuk-Tuks

  • The Jungle Trail from Ella Town: A scenic 25-minute walk starting near Art Café on the road toward Little Adam’s Peak. The path winds through private residential tea plots and pine trees before dropping directly onto the tracks.
  • The Tuk-Tuk Route: Take a short tuk-tuk ride to the Nine Arch View Cafe parking area, followed by a 10-minute downhill walk to the valley floor.
  • Top Photo Spots: The hillside tea garden directly above the tunnel mouth, and the valley floor looking up between arches four and five to emphasize the sheer height.
“Don't rush back into Ella after the train passes! Walk along the railway tracks through the tunnel toward Demodara. Demodara station features the famous 'Loop'—where the railway line wraps around a mountain and passes directly underneath itself through a lower tunnel!”
