Crossing the long road bridge over the wide, slate-grey waters of the Kalu River (Black River) 40 kilometers south of Colombo, you arrive at the spiritual gateway to southern Sri Lanka: the majestic Kalutara Bodhiya.
No journey down the southern coastal highway is complete without pausing at this revered shrine. For generations, every bus driver, lorry driver, and private motorist traveling along the Galle Road stops here to drop coins into roadside donation tills and receive the blessings of the sacred Bodhi tree for safe travels.
1. The World’s Only Hollow Stupa
While ancient Buddhist stupas in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are solid brick monuments encasing hidden relics, the colossal white stupa of Kalutara—built in the 1960s—is unique:
- It is the world’s first and only hollow Buddhist stupa (chaitya).
- Visitors can walk directly inside the monumental dome, where a second, smaller stupa stands in the center beneath high vaulted ceilings.
- The interior perimeter walls are adorned with 74 exquisite murals depicting the life of Siddhartha Gautama and the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
2. The Sacred Bodhi Tree
On the elevated riverbank opposite the stupa grows the Kalutara Bodhiya—one of the 32 saplings (Dethis Maha Bodhi) derived from the original Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura planted in the 2nd century BCE.
Surrounded by golden railings, devotees offer fragrant purple water lilies, light brass coconut oil lamps, and pour water around the roots of the sacred tree while monks chant protective blessings (seth pirith).
3. Practical Road Trip Stop
- Location: Right along the main A2 coastal highway.
- Etiquette: Remove shoes and hats before entering the temple compound; ensure shoulders and knees are covered.
- Drive-By Blessing: Even if you only pause for five minutes, watching your driver make a reverent offering at the roadside tills connects you directly to the living spiritual culture of Sri Lanka's roads.
“In Sri Lanka, we never begin a long driving journey to the south without paying our respects at Kalutara Bodhiya. It brings calm to the driver and peaceful protection to everyone in the vehicle.”
